Celebration.

We read 64 books last month.

Each time my students and I finish a choice book, we add a link to a paper chain with the title of the novel and our name.

See that poster above? That's my students on the track with their book chain from their freshman year.

See that poster above the bulletin board? That’s my students on the track with their book chain from their freshman year.

They don’t GET anything for finishing a book, except for the ability to put a link on the chain.  They’re informally assessed on their choice books through conferencing with me during our start-of-class reading time.

They don’t do projects on choice books or write about their choice books (although I do encourage them to make connections to their choice reading in more formal analysis).  They can abandon books at any time.  I want them to abandon books at any time.

We read to read.  We read to enjoy reading.

We read the things we like to get better at reading the things we don’t like.

We’re starting our first official literature unit within the next few days, where my students will have a choice between four “classic” coming-of-age novels.

Alongside this unit, we’ll continue our choice reading.
